The Bribery Act and a free lunch!

On Friday, 24th September, accountants, bankers, procurement managers and business owners came to the Jurys Inn, Exeter for the lunchtime meeting of Tozers LLP’s business club, BusinessWise.

Matthew Jackson, commercial partner at Tozers solicitors and Amy laver, solicitor, gave separate talks to around 50 attendees (on the Companies Act 2006 and the Bribery Act 2010 respectively).  One of the guests, Tony Stevens of Handelsbanken, said that the Tozers’ business club meeting was a “good opportunity to learn and network.”

The talks were followed by a networking lunch. Richard Thorneycroft, partner and head of commercial at Tozers who chaired the meeting, comments: “The purpose of “BusinessWise”, Tozers’ business club, is to provide a forum to discuss specific commercial topics of common interest and to share information on any other wider business issues our guests might have.  Meetings are held quarterly at the Jurys Inn, Exeter and attendance is free of charge but places are limited and allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. The next meeting will be held on Friday, 14th January 2011.”

The Bribery Act 2010 comes into force in April 2011 and will have the effect of making commercial organisations responsible for bribery committed by their staff or other associates if they cannot prove they have adequate procedures in place to prevent it.
