The Academies Act 2010 was supposed to introduce a new regime whereby schools with Academy status were to be regulated by a body other than the Charity Commission, despite having charitable status. This new provision was due to come into force on 1 January 2011.
It was previously suggested that the Young People's Learning Agency would be given the regulatory role but this is now in doubt and the Government has given no indication as to when the decision will be made.
