Do you keep information that can identify your customers, such as their names and addresses? For most holiday park owners the answer will be "yes" which means the Data Protection Act 1988 will apply to you. Park owners are often approached by the police, or the local authority or council and asked to give out information about their customers. Sometimes private companies, such as insurance companies or gas or electricity companies, will ask for information.
Most park owners are aware of the Data Protection Act 1988 and often quite rightly do not want to give out information about customers or residents straight away. But there are times when you can give out the information without breaking the law. In those circumstances, if you did not give out the information a Court order could be made against you and you could possibly have to pay legal costs. It is important to get this right, both to protect your customers' identity, your business and your pocket.
Information on the Data Protection Act can be found at www.ico.gov.uk, or we can help you find your way around this tricky area of law to make sure you do the right thing if asked for people's details.
