A Strong Appeal

A Charity Commission report, on funds left unspent years after appeals on radio for the tsunami and the Pakistani earthquake disasters, has stressed the need for proper planning, especially when there is an urgent need for humanitarian aid. Before launching in, trustees should consider whether they are able to deliver services where the disaster has occurred. If not, they should raise funds for a charity that can. It is a timely reminder, too, to make sure that all the options are explained in any appeal literature, including what happens if the appeal is oversubscribed or fails to reach its target.

Interestingly, neither of the two radio stations involved were charities, but the Commission makes clear that the funds raised by the appeals were held for charitable purposes and so came within its jurisdiction. An important point for any keen fund-raiser inclined to 'go it alone'.
