Tiverton schools choose to become ‘Co-operative’

The less controversial option (as compared with independent academies) of Trust status for schools seems to be increasing in popularity as a vehicle for development in the ever-changing education landscape.

12 schools, including 10 primary schools, have just voted to become Trust schools under the Co-operative umbrella. From a legal perspective, Trust schools retain their maintained status but become employers of their staff and own the land on which the school is sited.

Trust status is, it seems, less daunting for schools who feel the freedoms afforded by academy status do not suit them and allows schools to focus on drawing support from the communities around them.

For more information on conversion to Trust status please see to our guidance note here.
