Better Medical Care Costs Less

We are pleased to confirm the launch of an Animation video entitled “Better care costs less” produced by Prompt (PRactical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training), a charity whose aim is to make childbirth safer through evidence-based, multi-professional training and research.

We were delighted to be asked to sponsor this project having had strong links for many years with the Charities Prompt and the Erb’s Palsy Group.

The animation video was produced following publication of important research (a link to which is below) as to the effect on quality of life of brachial plexus injuries in affected adults and parents.

Brachial Plexus Injury can lead to a permanent physical disability known as Brachial Plexus Palsy, or Erb’s Palsy.  It is usually caused through trauma to the nerves in the neck and often to an infant during birth, yet it can be avoided in most cases with better medical care.  Erb’s Palsy can have a devastating effect on the individual and their family having to cope with the practical day-to-day problems it causes, and the psychological impact that commonly accompanies it.   This is neatly and sensitively described in the animation video.

The authors of the research paper obtained data from affected adults and parents and compared the findings with population norms.  The results confirmed that there is a poorer quality of life for those affected by Erb’s Palsy than the general population.

It is hoped that this research together with the animation video will highlight the longer-term effects of the injury on the individual, the caregivers and the wider health system. Further that it will promote the message that investing in evidence based maternity training which Prompt advocate and provide, to prevent the injury occurring, more than justifies the cost.

My firm are the leading medical negligence solicitors in the country for Erb’s Palsy claims having conducted over 260 claims in the last 20+ years.  We therefore know only too well the significant financial cost this injury causes our health service and the human cost to those affected by it.  We were delighted to be involved in this project, encouraging our clients to participate in the study and in sponsoring and promoting the animation video below.
