Birmingham Children’s Services is now rated by the Department of Education as a ‘national disgrace’

According to the BBC, Birmingham Children’s Services – which has been under close scrutiny since 2009 – is now rated by the Department of Education as a ‘national disgrace’.

The report goes onto mention that the service will now be run by a Trust.  A similar Trust was set up in Doncaster which has seen some success in the new structure.  Birmingham reports a high turnover of staff and is said to rely heavily on agency social workers.  The report suggests improvements in morale should be made a priority.  We have to remember that it is not social workers who injure or kill children.  Birmingham is often described as one of the most deprived areas of the UK and many social workers are reportedly handling 20-30 cases each, against a recommendation of 15.

If the report is to be believed, it is clear that action to improve Birmingham’s Children’s Services need to be made.  I am hopeful that the Trust can implement and maintain those improvements so that children and families receive the help and support they need and that children in danger are protected.
