Domestic Abuse

Legal aid victory

In a recent decision the Court of Appeal has decided that the following aspects of the legal aid regulations are invalid:

  • The requirement for verification of domestic violence being within a 24 month period before an application for legal aid; and
  • The exclusion of financial abuse from the definition of domestic abuse.

Whilst it is a small victory in that these important issues have been noted by the higher courts, it does not ensure that all victims of domestic abuse will find it easier to access legal aid.

“The Archers” tackle domestic abuse

Radio 4 drama The Archers has tackled a difficult domestic violence storyline in which a female character stabbed her abusive husband.

The show has prompted fans to raise more than £90,000 for women’s shelter, Refuge.

The storyline has received mixed reactions but it has certainly sparked debate on an issue that affected 1.4 million women in Britain in 2014, it must also be recognised that domestic violence is not just confined to female victims.
