Insights from our Trainee: Benjamin Thomson

Why Tozers?

I wanted to stay in the South-West after finishing my Law Degree at the University of Exeter. I graduated with a First Class honours degree and interviewed with several South-West firms but found Tozers application process to be the most apt way of testing my potential; rather than being asked questions like “What two historical figures would you have dinner with?” I was asked to research a recent development in the law and present my results to a Partner and HR. A firm that allowed me to demonstrate my research and argumentative abilities in this way was one that I wanted to work for. They were also friendly and helpful in the interview, wanting me to do my best rather than trying to catch me out and this approach has continued in my first seat: everyone in the seat has been friendly, supportive and understands how difficult it is for a Trainee in their first job!

What have you found most interesting?

For me, learning that the work is for the client has been the most interesting part of training – that research tasks aren’t just for my own knowledge or to pass an exam but to actually help someone. Although it sounds simple, I had spent four years reading textbooks and journals; analysing and evaluating the law for exams rather than understanding what a client wants, why they want it and what the easiest way of achieving their aims would be. The firm has inculcated this approach by allowing me to write to and phone clients as well as attending client meetings and of course encouraging me to act on my initiative and being as pro-active as possible.

Outside of work.

During my time at Tozers we have participated in multiple DASLS events and I have been on the team for two quizzes. We have also had a Great British Bake-Off competition at the office, as well as other charity fundraising events, including Tozers’ participation in the Great West Run and a Tuck Shop at the firm. I also enjoyed the firm’s Christmas party, held on the University of Exeter campus, and the Wealth Management team socials.
