Legal 500 2017 success for Tozers

Devon law firm Tozers LLP has again been recognised as one of the South West’s top performing firms of solicitors in the Legal 500. The Legal 500 has been published for over twenty years and the 2017 edition has just been announced, providing the most comprehensive and worldwide coverage currently available on legal service providers. It is widely regarded as offering the definitive judgement of law firms’ capabilities.

Tozers’ corporate & commercial work has been recognised for the first time and joins the firms’ other areas of work including employment; family; social housing; charities and clinical negligence. Speaking about Tozers’ performance in the 2017 Legal 500, Paul Kelly, Managing Partner – said: “We are delighted to be recognised by the Legal 500 again this year, having six different departments of our firm acknowledged by the directory. It is gratifying to see that the hard work and success rates of our corporate & commercial, employment, social housing, family, charity and clinical negligence lawyers have been reflected in the comments just published in this year’s Legal 500.”

Here are some of the 2017 Legal 500 comments on Tozers:

Charities and Not-for-Profit
Devon-based firm Tozers LLP significantly bolstered its practice with the hire in January 2017 of James Evans to co-head the team with Richard King. Evans’ expertise includes advising on mergers, collaborations, governance and constitutional matters, while King regularly handles issues relating to compliance, fundraising, legacies, property, tax and Charity Commission investigations. Property specialist Vernon Clarke and commercial litigator Stephen Jennings are also recommended.

Clinical Negligence
Tozers LLP specialises in advising on catastrophic injury claims, particularly brain injury claims. The ‘excellent’ team also has experience in handling cancer diagnosis delay claims, cerebral palsy claims, Erb’s palsy claims and matters relating to autism, in particular acquired autism. The ‘very thorough, pleasant, patient and professional’ Endurance Arthur and Stuart Bramley head the practice.

Corporate & Commercial
Tozers LLP handles investment and restructuring work and has a niche focus on the mobile home and holiday park industries. The department is headed by James Orpin, whose experience runs the gamut of corporate and commercial law, from M&A to group reorganisations. Amy Laver is an associate in the corporate and commercial group and acted for the sell-side clients in the sale of the share capital of a caravan park.

Tozers LLP acts for commercial clients and charities, almost exclusively for respondents, but also undertakes work for clients from the public sector and senior employees. The ‘excellent’ and ‘extremely professional’ team has a particular focus on the housing sector, acting for a number of registered housing providers in relation to senior level exits, proposed mergers and day-to-day HR support. Stephen Jennings heads the practice and is ‘a calming influence’. Paul Kelly is recommended.

Tozers LLP has ‘a wealth of matrimonial finance experience including complex business and trusts issues’ and gives ‘precise accurate advice at a very competitive price’. Exeter-based Tracy Lambert, a mediator and a collaborative law practitioner, advises on public and private family law matters, high-net-worth matrimonial cases and cohabitation disputes. The highly recommended Tony Wood leads the Newton Abbot family team, which also includes Mark Williams, Sarah Miller. Caroline Ryan is also recommended.

Social Housing
The social housing department at Tozers LLP acts for more than 30 registered providers on a national and regional level, and is experienced in transactional work including housing management litigation, portfolio securitisation and refinancing. The property team is managed by Stephen Burtchaell, who acts primarily for regional housing associations on site acquisitions and subsequent developments of affordable units. Simon Sanger-Anderson heads the social housing practice overall.

Stephen Burtchaell has also been recognised as a leading individual.
