What makes a good charity lawyer?

Those who practise charity law understand the rules relating to the setting up and operation of charities and non-profit organisations. Charity lawyers operate in a small but wide-ranging sector.

Lawyers in the charities team at Tozers Solicitors LLP may find themselves advising on governance, charitable status and relationships with the Charity Commission or dealing with enquiries regarding tax and VAT, contracts, mergers and takeovers, partnerships and fundraising. Charities can have a diverse set of legal needs and so other teams at Tozers may be called to deal with all sorts of areas that affect not-for-profit organisations, such as employment law, data protection, dealing with land, intellectual property and so on.

Key to working as a charities solicitor is an interest and passion for the Third Sector as well as an excellent knowledge of charity law and the Charities Act 2011.

Richard King –  Who is a partner at Tozers, head of the charities team and chairman of the firm – has been acting for charities for over 35 years. In addition to being a Member of the Charity Law Association and of the professional body and a member the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, Richard is Chairman of the Conference of Solicitors for Catholic Charities.

Richard has been ranked in the Legal 500 and Chambers UK legal directories for many years for his charity law work and in the Chambers UK 2015 legal directory he is listed as a notable practitioner for Charities with the following comment:

Richard King of Tozers LLP’s “level-headedness, clear and calm advice and professionalism” make him a go-to adviser for numerous third-sector clients. He continues to advise clients from the ecclesiastical and education sectors, on issues spanning incorporations, constitutions and commercial property.”

Richard has just received the following testimonial from his client, Charles Cocking:

“The most efficient and polite service I’ve ever had from a legal entity!”

As a good charity lawyer, Richard is well aware of the pressures under which charity trustees and staff have to operate and it is always his aim to help charities get their structures right and find solutions to their problems.
