A consultant solicitor in the charities & social enterprises team
Richard is the chairman of the firm, though he has retired from the partnership and now works part-time as a consultant, mainly helping the charities and social enterprises team with specialist advice.
He specialises in a broad range of charity law including formation, mergers and collaborations, compliance issues, fundraising, legacies, property, tax and Charity Commission investigations. He was until recently a trustee of the national charity Catholic Trust for England & Wales, Chairman of the Conference of Solicitors for Catholic Charities and governor of an independent school, and he chairs two charities.
“I aim to help charities and schools by giving them the constitutional framework to deliver their services in the best way possible with minimal distraction. The Charity Commission constantly stresses the need for charities to demonstrate their value and ‘rebuild public trust in charity’. Trustees and CEOs have a huge number of regulations, best practice and protocols to contend with. We try to help them make sense of these so they can see the wood for the trees and get on with helping their beneficiaries”.
Richard is a member of the Charity Law Association and of the professional body, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. He has been ranked as a notable practitioner for Charities in the Chambers UK 2017 legal directory, in which they say:
Richard King advises a wide range of charities on incorporation, constitutional and property matters. Sources say: “He dealt with every aspect of the process quickly and was very helpful in guiding the trustees through the process”
Richard has also been recognized in the Legal 500 2019 legal directory in which they describe Richard as “very personable, ethical, honest, wise, frank, and delightful to work with”.
Richard qualified as a solicitor in 1979 and became a partner in 1983.
This is why I value your services: very prompt, very reliable and high quality deliverable. Totally unrivalled!
