Hospital Acquired Infections

Hospital Acquired Infections

Sometimes, when staying in hospital, patients pick up infections.

Contracting one of these infections within a hospital is not necessarily a result of medical negligence, although it may well be – it depends on the circumstances.

Common infections include:

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) is caused when bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin and multiply. Redness and swelling are generally the first symptoms often followed by boils or abscesses. If the infection enters the blood stream it can cause sepsis.

Clostridium difficile infection (C Diff) is a natural bacterium that lives in the gut. The natural balance of this bacterium can be upset after surgery or antibiotics. If this happens, the bacteria can multiply and release toxins often causing fever and diarrhoea.

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is a type of bacteria that is the main cause of life-threatening infections in newborn babies but can also, in rare cases, affect adults. This bacteria can live harmlessly within the vaginal or gastrointestinal tracts of healthy women and be passed onto babies either during birth or while the baby is still in the womb. Developing this infection can include; blindness, deafness, cerebral palsy, meningitis or pneumonia.

When looking at whether an infection should have been avoided, our specialist team will look at and consider:

  • delays in recognising or treating the infection
  • inappropriate treatment of the infection
  • inadequate treatment of an open wound
  • failure to have proper infection control policies and procedures
  • failure to put into practice proper infection control procedures
