All schools must become Academies

Media reports – for example this BBC article – suggest George Osborne will push Government policy that all schools must become Academies in this afternoon’s budget.

It is expected that the Department for Education will publish draft legislation this week which will end the role of local authorities as education providers. The Prime Minister has previously stated how he wants every school to become an Academy. However, a year ago, 14,326 primary schools remained attached to local authorities as did over 1,300 state secondary schools. By this reckoning, there are still many schools that have yet to become Academies.
