The Ombudsman’s Guide to Recording Planning Decisions

More than 2,000 complaints are received each year by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (the “Ombudsman”) about Local Authority planning departments in England. One of the Ombudsman’s main reasons for upholding complaints is where a Local Planning Authority has failed to properly explain the reason behind its decision.

As a consequence, the Ombudsman has prepared and published guidance aimed at providing Local Planning Authorities with clear and practical steps that can be taken to ensure planning decisions are properly explained and avoid complaints being made.

It also provides an insight into how the Ombudsman generally deals with complaints of this nature.
