C Ya! MEES Changes for Residential Rental Property Kicked Into the Long Grass

Whatever your views on the wisdom, or otherwise, of the Prime Minister's announcement this week to row back from a raft of 'green' measures that had been designed to help the country meet its Net Zero targets, one group who may be breathing a sigh of relief are residential landlords.
For some years, there has been a steady tightening of the environmental standards that both residential and commercial rental properties have had to meet. The plan was for that to continue.
In the residential sector, landlords were facing the potential of needing to ensure their rental properties met an energy performance rating of C for any new tenancies by 2025, and for all renewal tenancies by 2028. Landlords were already beginning to think about how that could be achieved - and at what financial cost.
But it seems these plans have been scrapped. Instead, the message from Downing Street is that households should be encouraged to "upgrade the energy efficiency of their properties ……where they can."
At a time when residential landlords facing a lot of change when many are choosing to leave the sector, and when rents are hitting record levels for tenants, many in the sector are likely to be relieved that this will be one less thing to worry about in the years to come.
