International Day of Persons With Disabilities 2025: Standing With Clients and the Charities That Support Them

Today, on International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025, we take the opportunity to reflect on the clients we serve and the partners who work alongside us to ensure that individuals disabled as a result of medical negligence are supported, not only throughout the litigation process but long after their claim has concluded.

As a specialist medical negligence team, we act for clients and families whose lives have been permanently altered by avoidable injuries resulting in long-term disabilities. Whilst the legal journey can secure the funding necessary for long-term care, equipment, therapy and independence, it is the support charities who walk beside families from the earliest days following injury and remain a vital resource into the future.

We are proud to be on the legal panel for, and to actively support, three exceptional organisations:

The Erb’s Palsy Group

The Erb’s Palsy Group provides invaluable emotional, practical and community support to families affected by brachial plexus injuries sustained during birth.

We have worked closely with the charity for over 30 years to ensure families understand their legal rights and can access specialist advice early. Many of our clients tell us that the Group’s sense of community, from parent networks to practical support on treatment and therapy, helps families feel informed, empowered and less isolated.

Our role is to secure compensation that meets lifelong needs, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, orthotics, adaptive equipment, educational support and future care.

The Erb’s Palsy Group helps clients navigate the day-to-day; our legal team ensures the financial security to make that support sustainable.

Meningitis Research Foundation

Meningitis can cause catastrophic, life-changing injuries, including amputations, hearing loss, neurological disabilities and learning difficulties. The Meningitis Research Foundation leads the way in awareness, research, and vital family support.

Their guidance during the acute stages of illness and early rehabilitation is invaluable for families facing uncertainty.

Throughout the litigation process, we work closely with the charity to provide a dual framework of emotional and legal support: the Foundation answers questions about recovery and support pathways, whilst we focus on establishing responsibility and securing damages that fund lifelong care, treatment, assistive technology, specialist therapy and loss of earnings.

Group B Strep Support

Group B Strep Support is an essential voice for parents whose babies have been affected by Group B Strep infection. Through their advocacy and information services, they help families understand the condition, its risks, and the implications of missed opportunities to prevent infection.

As panel members, we ensure that parents have access to specialist legal advice when avoidable failures in screening, risk assessment or treatment have caused devastating outcomes such as brain injury, hearing impairment, sepsis or limb loss.

Whilst the charity supports families emotionally and practically, our legal work focuses on securing compensation to meet lifelong needs, from care, to treatment, specialist aids and equipment, accommodation, home adaptations and loss of earnings.

Flying the Flag for Support - During Litigation and Beyond

The litigation process can be long and complex, but we are keen to provide fully rounded support.

Each of these charities provides:

  • Trusted information and guidance
  • Peer support networks
  • Emotional and practical assistance
  • Advocacy and awareness-raising
  • Continued community that lasts long after a legal claim concludes

We “fly the flag” for the extraordinary work they do because it complements the role we play as the legal team. Together, we offer clients a combination of specialist knowledge, empathy, and practical guidance, aiming to secure long-term financial security.

Achieving Long-Term Support Through Damages

Whilst no amount of compensation can undo the harm caused by medical negligence, it can transform the quality of life for disabled individuals.

The damages we secure often cover:

  • Lifetime care packages - professional carers, case management and respite
  • Specialist therapies - including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and psychiatric support
  • Adaptive aids and equipment - from wheelchairs to specialist seating and assistive technology
  • Home adaptations - creating accessible, safe living environments
  • Accommodation – including property purchase or rental to meet their needs
  • Travel and transport – ensuring accessibility is maintained in adapted vehicles
  • Loss of earnings and pension, and future financial security
  • Medical treatment costs, including surgery, ongoing interventions and private rehabilitation

Working in tandem with the support charities, we strive to ensure that every client has the resources to live with dignity, independence and opportunity.

We are proud to work with The Erb’s Palsy Group, the Meningitis Research Foundation and Group B Strep Support, organisations whose compassion, expertise and advocacy make a profound difference and an improvement in the quality of life of our clients.
