Maternity service failings leads to public enquiry call in Nottingham

Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) is facing review following a number of problems regarding its under-fire maternity services, calls which are being backed by councillors. An investigation found dozens of babies in care had passed away or were left with serious injuries.

County Councillors in Nottinghamshire have passed a motion in which there will be a meeting with Health Secretary Sajid Javid regarding these failings.

The maternity units are already subject of an independent review. A report was published by a Care Quality Commission in 2020 which rated the maternity units at both the Nottingham City Hospital and the Queen's Medical Centre as inadequate. It was highlighted that there was poor management, low staffing and fears over the standard of care.

NUH have said they are to co-operate fully with the independent review. A spokesperson has commented saying they are doing all they can in their power to ensure families using their services are getting the best care possible.

Co-head Endurance Arthur of Tozers Medical Negligence team comments, I welcome this development and hope that an enquiry into the services at Nottingham University Hospitals will better inform the government and the public of the tragic consequences for patients, their families, the staff involved and the NHS as a whole when patient concerns about standards of care and staff concerns about low staffing levels and poor management are ignored.
