Record delays for registering LPAs with the Office of the Public Guardian

The England and Wales Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is still experiencing delays with the registration of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).

What is the current timeframe for registering LPAs?

In the summer the average time for registration of LPAs was up from 8 weeks to 15 weeks with the OPG asking that 20 weeks were given for registration to be completed. Moving now into the winter months there has been no improvement on these timescales and the OPG are now asking that they are given at least 12 weeks from the date they issue a reference number to the application before they are chased for a progress update. The average time for registration of LPAs remains at 20 weeks.

What is the impact of these delays?

LPAs must be registered before they can be used and given the delays it can leave those most vulnerable without the assistance that they need to deal with their finances or health and personal welfare. The OPG is advising that due to these delays, applicants should consider putting in place short-term options for health, welfare and financial decisions.
