Facts about amputation

An amputation is the surgical removal of part of the body, such as an arm or a leg
In May 2025, it was estimated that there were around 55,000 – 60,000 people living with amputation / limb difference
Between 2008 and 2022, on average, just under 20,000 amputations were performed on the NHS each year
The majority of these were amputations of lower limbs
A high percentage of amputations are avoidable

How we have helped people

Negligent surgery – where errors in surgery resulted in further (unsuccessful surgery) and eventually a below-knee amputation. A significant settlement was achieved reflecting a lump sum and annual payments to include amounts for loss of earnings, adapted accommodation and therapy needs, including case management and a support worker
Amputation as a result of incorrect diabetes management – consideration of the client’s pre-existing diabetes was not taken into account when managing (what should have been) a relatively straightforward wound from an injury resulting in amputation.
Delay in diagnosis of Charcot Arthropathy – a complex non-traumatic fracture to the foot in someone with Type 2 diabetes - resulting in severe bone infection and an above-the-knee amputation.
